Welcome to the Blog

A huge part of my job in the salon involves teaching you all the best ways to care for their hair... only sometimes it's a little too much info all at once. Here, you'll find long-form tips, tricks, and behind the scenes details to refresh your memory.

Hacks, help, and the fastest ways to a good hair day.

Let’s talk about the most basic haircare task we all have to do.

Do you really know how to brush your hair? Do you rip thru your tangles as fast as humanly possible or do you actually take the time to CARE for your hair? Do you have a good hairbrush?! How often do you brush out the dreadlock at the nape of your neck that you get from wearing a coat all day long? When was the last time you CLEANED your hairbrush? Does it look like a wookie lost its life in the bristles?! Let’s talk.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Brush your hair everyday at least once a day. Preferably before styling it in the morning or touching it with any hot tools. This may not apply to curly/wavy girls, but use your discretion, everyones hair is different! Pro tip: brush out your hair before you wash it and it’ll be a little less snarly when you’re done and you won’t shed so much in the shower because your brush pulled a lot of the loose strands out already. Now you don’t have to buy as much Draino, yay!

2. Whether your hair is wet or dry, brush your hair STARTING AT THE ENDS and gently work your way up the the scalp. Don’t just rip thru your beloved mane🙏🏻 You’re damaging it! If your hair is really long and tangly (like mine) you can use the front tip of your brush to super gently loosen snarls. Using less bristles will take longer, but protect your hair in the long run. Take an extra 60 seconds to brush your hair the right way, you WILL notice a difference!

3. ALSO, brush your scalp! It can stimulate blood flow and make your hair grow faster! It loosens gunk and product from your follicles and exfoliates dry skin, especially if you go awhile between washes and have some legit GUNK built up in there. I also brush my scalp on non-wash days to help distribute excess oil and dry shampoo! Don’t give yourself lacerations, just gently run your brush back from your front hairline or in little circles. It feels so good and is amazing for hair and scalp health!

4. Get a decent hairbrush. I love the big rectangular wet brushes (like the one pictured above,) these Kristin Ess detanging brushes from Target, and at the salon I use these silver Bathpack brushes that are SO affordable! A good brush will save your hair. If your hairbrush has seen better days and is missing bristles, it’s time for a replacement. Spend the $12. It’s worth it.

5. Now that you have a nice, shiny, brand new brush, KEEP IT CLEAN. It’s really not hard. All you have to do is once a week pull all the hair out and toss it. If you don’t let a giant mat of hair live there for 6+ months, you won’t get that gross, grey dust collecting underneath it either. Yeah, I’ve seen it! DON’T LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU!  📝ALSO NOTE: don’t pull the bristle beads off! They protect your scalp when you’re brushing and if your current tool of choice is missing most of them, it’s time for an upgrade.

See? Not so hard after all! Brushing our hair is one of the first things we learn as young people when our parents or friends teach us how to take care of ourselves, but it’s no joke. Brushing your hair the proper way is the foundation for healthy hair. Love your hair and it will love you back!
